The Alan Ross Weston Bar Association Scholarship Fund
Arranged & Organized by WBA Board Member, VP of WBA Scholarship Funding, Marla Porter-Gross, Esq.
A scholarship will be awarded to a Cypress Bay High School graduating senior who will be attending a 4-year university or college, has a background in music, intends to make music a central part of his/her future life and has career ambitions to pursue a career in law or a law-related field.
Background:The scholarship is being given in honor and memory of Alan Ross, Co-Founder of the Weston Bar Association. Alan, who was a highly regarded criminal defense attorney and practiced law for 41 years, loved music. Starting at age 14, he was a drummer and put himself through college and law school playing the drums in a band. He was a member of the Florida Bar and The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Alan was very much about doing things immediately. His lesson: don’t procrastinate. Life is too short to wait on things. If you have something in front of you, do it right now. His message was to not take for granted your time--that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and do what you need to do today rather than doing it tomorrow. Everyone considered Alan a friend because he was so inclusive of everyone and open to everyone.
Alan died of pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2017 and will be missed by his family and many friends and colleagues. This scholarship is a special tribute to Alan’s life and character—a way to pay it forward and extend the loss of a special person to a youngster who aspires forward on his or her path toward a meaningful future.
